COVID-19 Perceptions of Risk Travel Survey
TCMI Travel Anxiety Index©
TCMI’S TRAVEL ANXIETY INDEX© measures American travelers’ anxiety associated with domestic travel. The data is drawn from an online panel of U.S. residents who have traveled at least once in the last year and represent U.S. travelers. The index exists as a means to monitor fluctuations in overall traveler anxiety.
TCMI WEEKLY TRAVEL ANXIETY INDEX©
WHAT IS IT?
The TCMI Travel Anxiety Index© is a resource provided to the tourism industry which uses data collected from an ongoing survey to report perceptions of travel anxiety over time. The index is a barometer of anxiety, worry, and fear associated with travel within the U.S.
It allows you to monitor changes and fluctuations in perceptions of travel safety. It is an index that measures relative change in perceptions over time at any given week. It is presented as a percentage.
The change over last week is a comparison from the given week to the previous week. This change is presented as a percentage.
The week over year change is the change from the given week compared to the reference point of January 26th, which is the level of anxiety expressed before the COVID-19 crisis in the U.S. An increase of 283% means that travel anxiety is 283% higher than the reference point, which is January 26th, 2020.
METHODOLOGY
The TCMI Travel Anxiety Index© uses a panel of U.S. residents who respond to a weekly survey. The Travel Anxiety Index focuses on three dimensions: anxiety, fear, and worry. The variables used in the index represent only a small part of the entire survey data that is collected on a regular basis. Each wave has a minimum of 500 completed surveys, which are collected via an online panel.
The Travel Anxiety Index (TAI) is calculated by computing the relative score (the percent of negative replies divided by the total of the three categories of replies) for each of the three index questions (see Q1 below). On a five-point scale, the scales are recoded 1=1, 2=2, 3 and 3=4, 5. These are labeled 1=negative, 2=neutral, 3=positive. Each relative score is rounded to the first decimal place. The three scores are summed together and divided by the base period score (January 26th, 2020) and multiplied by 100.
Q.1. Please indicate how you feel when you think about travel in the U.S. right now.
Three values are reported: the weekly travel index score, the change over last week, and the week over year change. The baseline data is January 26th, before COVID-19 appeared in the United States.
